RICOH QUELL NOISE FEARS OVER FOOTBALL CLASH

RICOH Arena bosses have moved quickly to quell fears that the Champion of Champions final weekend might be disrupted by Coventry City being drawn at home in the FA Cup.

The big-money 16-man invitation tournament, with £100,000 going to the winner, starts on Monday with the final on Sunday, November 9.

That event was in the schedule long before the Sky Blues made their welcome return home recently after a controversial ground-share at Northampton’s Sixfields stadium.

And League One Coventry have now been handed an attractive first-round tie that weekend against non-league but nearby Worcester almost guaranteed to draw a crowd of 15,000 or more.

But stadium executives are confident that even goal celebrations will not disturb the usual hush expected around the green baize for a title won last year by Ronnie O’Sullivan.

At the time of writing the tie could be selected for live TV coverage by the BBC or BT Sport on either Saturday 8 or Sunday 9 November, with ITV4 already on site for the snooker.

The second snooker semi-final will take place in the Jaguar Arena on Saturday November 8, with the final the following day.

The stadium is well used to hosting more than one event at the same time as football – even if exhibitions and conferences do not require the quiet expected at snooker.

However Liz Cooper, marketing director for the stadium said: “We have never experienced noise bleed from the pitch to the Jaguar Hall and we have held a number of events at the same time as football.

“We often have multiple events both indoor and outside in the stadium bowl - a good example of this was when we staged the Davis Cup in April 2013 and Coventry City played Brentford.

“There are no real logistical or operational difficulties, the Ricoh Arena is a multipurpose venue its rare we only have one event taking place at one time.”

Organisers of the Champion of Champions believe football fans attending the game may well decide to take advantage of the top-class snooker on offer at the Ricoh Arena.

Matchroom’s Luke Riches said: “Timings permitting it could well be that Coventry and Worcester fans can do both and take in some snooker over the weekend.”
